Recently, I was at the airport waiting in line when a young man with special needs started talking to me. As we stood in line, he asked me all sorts of questions and even began telling me about his trip. He even lifted up his shirt to show me his sunburn, which his dad looked a little embarrassed about. It was no big deal to me. I said, "Yep, you have to be careful with the Florida sun."
He went on to tell me all sorts of stuff. Talking a lot and asking a lot of questions. It was time to get on the plane, I said good bye and headed on the plane. The man behind me in line said, "you were really nice to that young man." To which I said, "he was nice to talk to."
We got on the plane and a lady was sitting next to me. I noticed that the man behind me was with her and had a different seat. I asked them if they wanted to sit together. He said, "that would be great”. He had a window seat ,which honestly is not my favorite, and mine was an aisle seat. As much as I do love the aisle, I thought I would want to sit with my husband or travel companion, so I said, "no problem it's ok." He replied, "you are really nice, I never ask anyone to change seats because I never like it when they ask me." I said, "I treat others as I want to be treated." He said "you're right, I will too!"
Life is short, if people in general treated others they way they wanted to be treated, I believe more people would be happy, giving and kind. It's easy in the fast-paced world we live in, to forget this simple, yet important lesson. It really can be applied to all you do in business and in your personal life. My dad taught me years ago, to make decisions so that at the end of the day I could comfortably put my head on my pillow. Treating others as I want to be treated helps me do that daily. Slow down and ask yourself, "are you treating others as you would want to be treated?" It will come around one day and in the meantime you'll be happier, more giving and more kind.
God bless.
