The golden rule of treating people how you would want to be treated never goes out of style. One day this summer, I was dropping my 6-year-old daughter off at camp when the car line got backed up. Cars were swerving around a man pushing a large garbage container that had overflowed. He couldn't see that the container wouldn't move foward because he ran over a large piece of plastic lodged underneath.

As he continued to pushed it, garbage fell to both sides making a mess. I sat in my car and watched person after person swerve around him. And, I believe, they could see what I saw underneath but didn't stop and help him. I decided to stop, which was kind of a big deal to me. I am a busy mom like the rest of the world but that wasn't what was a big deal to me. I think we all need to slow down and help a fellow human. The big deal for me is I don't like my hands dirty and to help meant touching garbage. I know it's crazy because I shake thousands of people's hands in Team National and I will shake thousands more... Gladly!

But, I also make a point of looking for ways to help others. He clearly needed help. So I put my clean hand concern aside and helped him, picking up the debris and getting it out of his way. He was shocked and then he kept saying sorry and thank you. It really wasn't a big deal, it only took 5 minutes because with teamwork it went fast.

And the bonus was my daughter was in the car watching me the whole time. Naturally, when I got back in the car she said "why did you do that?". I said, "because he needed help, and it's good to help others." I went on to share that God wants us to help each other as he teaches in the Bible.

I didn't help this stranger so that I could teach my daughter about my faith or about helping others, but it was icing on the cake! And it's exactly how I would want to be treated. The truth is people of all ages are constantly watching you, especially children. Hopefully your actions will inspire them to help others!
